MD/PhD Program

The Cancer Biology GIDP offers students who are interested the opportunity to obtain a duel degree (MD/PhD).  Trainees complete both a medical degree (MD) as well as a doctor of philosophy (PhD) which creates a physician-scientist skilled in both experimental and clinical thinking.

Entry into the MD/PhD track begins with admission into the College of Medicine MD/PhD Program.  MD/PhD Students complete the first two years of clinical training and then transition into the Cancer Biology PhD Program and into a mentor’s laboratory.  MD/PhD students identify a mentor through interviews and short rotations during the summer between their first and second year of medical school.  A typical plan of study is shown below.  The Cancer Biology GIDP PhD/MD Dual Degree Program makes it possible to complete both degree objectives in a total of 7-9 years because the CBIO program counts certain units of College of Medicine coursework toward the credits needed to complete a CBIO PhD.

Dual degree students who may be interested in the Cancer Biology should contact the Program as soon as they have been admitted to the MD/PhD Program.
